September 9th, 2003 Thanks to Hugga for this submission: Hi all!!! Wow, it looks like I am the first person with a Katie sighting at the Toronto Film Festival!! My friend and I didn't have tickets to Pieces of April but we have had good luck in the rush ticket lines in the past so after work on Saturday we headed downtown and at 6:15 we were standing in line for the 9pm showing at Varsity Cinemas. And we waited....and waited...at 8:45pm we were 9th and 10th in line when a woman approached holding tickets. We waved her over and we able to buy 2 tickets!!!! Off we ran to the theatre where we got seats in about the 6 row on the right side. We still don't know if we would have gotten in if it wasn't for the ticket lady...the theatre was quite packed (we were told capacity was about 580 people). Shortly after 9 the stars were ushered into the theatre. Most of the cast came in (Patricia Clarkson, Oliver Platt, Derek Luke, Alison Pill and John Gallagher Jr)....but no Katie. We were getting a little worried because we attended I Love Your Work the night before, and although Joshua Jackson was on the list to attend he didn't show up. Then we saw Chris Klein walk up the aisle and knew that Katie couldn't be far behind. Finally Katie came in and found her seat in the middle of the theatre with the rest of the cast. The director, Peter Hedges, spoke for a few minutes and then the movie began. Pieces of April was an excellent movie!!! It was funny, it was sad, it was uplifting. Katie did a superb job as did the rest of the cast. It ended to a long and loud applause. Then the director and cast came up to the front of the theatre to answer questions. Katie only spoke once but she smiled throughout and exchanged whispers with Oliver Platt several times. On another note, on the way out the theatre we met Jason Wiles from Third Watch...well my friend talked to him and got his autograph, while I looked on from a distance (wimp that I am ). We saw most of the cast getting into cars outside and then heard Katie was leaving through another door. When we got there she was in a room and shortly after a woman came out and said that Katie wouldn't be signing and she told everyone to back off and take pictures. Then Katie was ushered out by several men and the woman. Once they got outside the crowd started swarming around her and her car. My friend said she saw her sigh a few autographs but I was hanging back from the mob. There was a slight altercation between one of the guards and a fan who wouldn't get away from the car. Then Jason Wiles appeared out of nowhere and hopped in the front seat of the car and it sped off, followed by a fan who had jumped into a cab. The whole situation was actually a bit scary and I don't blame Katie in the least for her reported hesitance in crowds. The security really wasn't very good. Two years ago I saw Michelle Williams, Christina Ricci and Jason Biggs leave from the same door after the Prozac Nation premiere and security kept everyone behind barriers as they left. Anyway, despite my huge disappointment that Josh didn't show up for his movie, I had an amazing time at the Festival and I am so glad I live close enough to Toronto to be able to go!!! hugga
