STUDIO PLAYS SCROOGE: NO YULE 'GIFT'
New York won't be getting "The Gift" for Christmas. Even the psychic played by Cate Blanchett in Sam Raimi's new gothic screen thriller might be mystified by Paramount Classics' last-minute decision to scrap next Wednesday's planned opening here. There's growing Oscar buzz surrounding Blanchett and co-stars Giovanni Ribisi and Hilary Swank - as well as the twisty screenplay by Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson, which some are calling this year's "The Sixth Sense." The movie will still open in Los Angeles next week for Academy consideration. But baffled Gotham reviewers have been told to save the raves they're already written until the film opens nationally on Jan. 19. Studio suits blame the crowded marketplace. "There are 30 films opening between now and the end of the year," says Paramount Classics co-president David Dinerstein, who noted that "The Grifters," among other pictures, got Oscar nominations without an early New York release. "We want to give it the space so it can be seen by the largest number of people."
