A few news tidbits for ya :) Thanks to Christina for letting us know that Katie attended the ESPN Action Sports & Music Awards on April 7th. Hey everybody! I just wanted to let everyone know that Katie attended the event with her boyfriend, actor (and show host) Chris Klein) and I got some shots of the two of them backstage. I'll let you know as soon as I have the chance to get some photos up. Don't forget to watch the show on ESPN on April 10th. Thanks to Denise for posting this lil Katie article from her local paper From the inside looking out Dawson's Creek Katie Holmes has been going from film project to film project, her latest being the Steve Gaghan film Abandon, in which she'll star opposite Ben Bratt. And that just goes to show that her brief respite from the cameras last summer, to attend classes at Columbia University, did nothing to dampen industry enthusiasm for the actress. In fact, her Dawson's mentor, creative star Kevin Williamson, says Holmes turned down three movies to hit the books for a while,(interesting tidbit) and he wholeheartedly applauds. Thanks to Icp for typing this up from UK "Star Magazine." STAR TAKES THE ACTRESS TO A PSYCHIC + DISCOVERS IT MIGHT BE TIME TO WRAP UP DAWSON'S FOR GOOD. She may have visited a psychic to predict her future in the brilliant chiller-thriller movie, The Gift, but Katie Holmes doesn't really go in for all that ESP, psychic abilities kind of stuff. Although she's not totally against the idea of an 'old soul', or people with intuitive natures, she's a good catholic girl from Toledo, Ohio, who turns to her family for advice, not a fortune teller. But that hasn't stopped her agreeing to accompany *star to a witchcraft shop, Other Worldly Waxes, in New York's trendy East Village, for a personalised reading. We've just finished our photo shoot - several hours of posing and vamping for the camera, with Katie's selections of Macy Gray and vintage U2 blaring from the stereo - and now Katie's meeting our reader, a wise-looking woman called Yasmine. BRINGING UP BABY Yasmine is swinging a pendulum over the cards. She places a large diamond - given to her by a mystical shaman - on the table. Over a round of double skim lattes, Katie, working a wholesome but sexy look in a pure white pullover sweater and tight faded jeans, chooses 10 cards with her left hand, concentrating on what the next three months will bring for her. According to the psychic, the years 2002 and 2006 will be big ones for Katie. The first will be a time of great career opportunities, the latter a time of a different kind of growth: motherhood. "I don't want to be a mother at 27!" Katie protests. It seems funny to think of her as a mother, as right now the people surrounding her have a tendency to baby the actress. Her publicist tells us to go easy on her: "She's only 21". And we're not to harp on about the bare-breasts scene she did in The Gift - she's only 21. And she's sort of freaked by the idea of a tarot reading, so her friend Albert is going to tag along for moral support because, after all, she's only 21. Maybe that's the curse of playing a 17-year-old on TV, of having baby-faced cheeks and being genuinely sweet, nice and softly-spoken. And to be fair, Katie calls herself 'naive', even after five years in the business, and admits to surrounding herself with people who protect her. But, make no mistake, Katie Holmes is no pushover. When our psychic brings up the question of a boyfriend, Katie grabs the tape recorder, turns it off, and sets it by her side until the answer is given. Later on, she tries to make a deal: she'll keep talking to us rather than sneak off to see Almost Famous with Albert, if we don't print anything about her relationship with cute American Pie and Here On Earth actor, Chris Klein. When we tell her we can't comply, she's out of there within 15 minutes. EVERYTHING CHANGES So let's talk about Katie's movies instead. As with many young actors' careers, a strike-while-the-iron's-hot mentality found her filming three films in quick succession, with starring roles in Disturbing Behaviour and Teaching Mrs Tingle plus the brillant raver-flick, Go. "I was way over my head, and I don't think I really understood what I was doing," she reveals. "I approached everything with such naivety. They were great opportunities, and I had a wonderful time doing these teen movies, but it was kind of time to not do that any more." Understandably, Katie got sick of playing teenagers. "I mean, I'm getting older, you don't really wanna do that on vacation. And I was fortunate enough to have opportunities to work with people like Michael Douglas and Robert Downey Jr, who, you know, I would cry if I saw in a restaurant. I wouldn't be able to walk up and ask for an autograph." Instead of cashing in on more throwaway teen flicks, Katie smartly opted for smaller but pivotal roles in meatier films with great casts and directors. As Katie admits, "At first, you are just so excited. I was just like, 'everyone seems so nice and the producers are great.' And then you start to figure out how it all works." This year she's set to take another starring lead in Abandon, where she plays a university student who has strange visions of her ex-boyfriend, who vanished mysteriously during her freshman year. Not to mention a role in Phone Booth, about a man who'll be shot if he hangs up after taking a call. Dawson's co-star, James Van Der Beek, says Katie has grown up a lot: "You always hear people say. 'You know what I like about so-and-so? They haven't changed a bit.' That always rubs me the wrong way, because [in Katie's case] you start out in high school, send out a tape from your basement in Toledo, then all of a sudden you are surrounded by all these people in your life who stand to make a huge profit from you. You have to change a little bit! You have to grow up and get a little more savvy. But I think that Midwestern sweetness will always be a part of Katie." END OF THE CREEK Katie has a question for Yasmine the fortune-teller: is there any big news in her career in six months' time? She won't admit it but she's asking if Dawson's Creek will finish this year for good. Katie has come a long way since her first day on the series back in 1998 and the time hasn't passed without some growing pains. Although the main cast has become like a family, you can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family. Even if you love them, you're stuck with them. She became romantically linked with Josh Jackson, and that proved tricky for both of them when they split. "I was 19 and he was 20, so it wasn't easy right away," Katie admits."But it's a part of growing up. And I'm glad that we work together - now we're good friends. Now, we're all just kind of mellow, and over each other." She laughs. "No, don't print that because I do love everybody, but it's funny because we get on each other's nerves, and we joke about it, and we tell each other." On set, Katie plays the same role she does back home in Toledo - the baby. She's fifth out of five kids, and admits that it's just part of her personality to pester and stir things up. When she started playing Joey, she was just out of high school herself, and was really able to relate to her character. "It's so weird, because you do it every day and sometimes it feels like you're just that person all the time. God, now I'm rambling. Maybe I've had too much coffee!" Returning to Dawson's this year was particularly difficult, as the gap etween 21-year-old Katie and 17-year-old Joey had widened considerably. "A lot of times you'll read the script and think, 'This is ridiculous, why would you ever react this way?' You have to work hard to remember those feelings, because at that age you probably would act that way. But not after the experiences we've had in the last four years." Is it time to graduate? "It's weird, because it is like we went to high school again, in a way. So playing seniors, you kind of get the sense that we should be wrapping this up. It feels like it is time." SCARED, NOT SEXY So, what's next on the cards for Katie? Since we've paid Yasmine good money for her time, we'll let her answer. "It looks like you've been going through some big changes, maybe feeling like there's more that you want to learn about yourself, your spirituality, or being a woman." Weirdly enough, Katie says playing bad girl Jessica King in The Gift took her to places she'd never been before. "That wasn't the character I was initially drawn to at all," she smiles. "The thought of doing that scared me. It was really different from anything I've ever done and who I am, so that made it all the more exciting and challenging. I'm definitely not as strong as her. I'm reserved and I don't like confrontations, and if I get upset about something I repress it, so it was really fun to get a lot of that out. I guess I used some anger!" Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar first met Katie five years ago and knows how different Katie is from her character Jessica. "She'll play that character in a film, but she's not gonna pose nude on a magazine cover to scream, 'Hey, I'm sexy!' She's proud of who she is and knows that a lot of girls and women look up to her. She has a sweet, wholesome image and that's who she is. She's not trying to shatter that image." HOT FOR CHRIS Maybe Sarah didn't check out The Gift, where Katie not only went bare breasted, but also slept around and got beaten up. "That hurt - I'm not gonna lie," she explains. "It felt very real. I got thrown up against the car and I had bruises, and then flew and saw my boyfriend." She laughs, remembering what she said to Chris Klein: "Take care of me! I hurt!" Our psychic friend has picked up on Katie's continuing romance with Chris. "There's something that you've worked hard at and had a lot of patience about that will be coming a little bit more into fruition,"says Yasmine. "It does seem like someone with a romantic connection to you. Do you have any water sign men around you?" The tape is turned off. She is encouraged to go for it, not back away from it. "You're a fire sign, you've got a fieriness going. Don't get shy or introverted about it. Don't fight it, just go with the flow. A few months down the line, things get really serious with him. There may even be a proposal!" Katie gets exasperated when she finally does talk about her boyfriend. "It's not like it's a big secret," she says. "It's just really important to me so I like to keep it to myself. It's definitely an amazing part of my life, and I'm very proud to be a part of his life." She then throws her hands in the air, wobbles her head around and, in her best Valley Girl voice, says: "I think he's really cute, and a really good actor and hot! Are you gonna put that in there? I think he's hot!" And, at last, some of that fieriness: "Just don't mess with me! All right, next question, mister...." |
