Style secrets from the sets of new films
Katie Holmes in The Gift: Joey Potter would be ashamed to try it-but for Katie Holmes, discarding her sophomoric Dawson's Creek look for eyeliner and some serious attitude, as she does in this month's The Gift, is just part of the job. So, apparently, is baring a little skin. In this movie mystery Holmes plays Jessica King, the sexy town tease of Brixton, Ga., where she regins over the local social swirl until she is mysteriously murdered. Annie (Cate Blanchett), a clairvoyant mother of three, joins the hunt for the killer, but
Jessica's active sexual past, which involved flirtations with a number of men (including Greg Kinnear and Keanu Reeves), makes the truth hard to pin down.
Makeup artist Kelly Gore Jefferson who also works with Holmes on Dawson's Creek used heavier eye makeup for this role. "As Joey, she's fresh scrubbed and natural looking," she says. "This is a more sultry look. It was fun to put makeup on her and actually have it look like she's got some on. In this role she's one hot tamale." - Elizabeth Schatz
Hair: "She's Supposed to look like the kind of girl who spends three hours on
her hair," says stylist Emanuel Millar. He created the "fluffy, sexy" look
by applying Redken glass to we hair, then blow-drying and setting it in
medium-hot rollers. After removing rollers, he ran his fingers through her
hair and blew it dry again to smooth it out. Millar then brushed the hair,
curled the ends under with a round brush, and finished with American Crew
hairspray.
Skin: Jefferson started with Origins Original skin foundaton in Linen (1),
applied lightly over the face. She then used Benetint (2) on the apples of
cheeks, which, she says, makes you "look like you're blushing from the inside
out," and dusted on T. LeClerc powder in Camelia
Eyes: Using MAC eye shadows, Jefferson created "bedroom eyes" by first
brushing Vapour (3)left all over Holmes's Lids, then creating definition with
Symmetry (3,right) in the crease and Mystery at the outer triangle. She
lined the upper lashes with Prescriptives Liquid Coco-ink liner, then used
Chanel Teak pencil on the inside of the bottom lashes and finished with Cover
Girl Marathon black mascara.
Lips "Katie has great shape to her lips," says Jefferson, who simply swiped
on Clinique Almost lipstick in Bronze Lilac
