Dawson's Creek gave audiences a weekly dose of Katie Holmes, which, after six years, became a difficult habit to break. Lets face it: we were spolied. Katie's move to focus on film means she's out of the limelight and rarely on our screens anymore, but the question is: should Katie return to television now or anytime in the future? A side-effect of being on screen every week means there's a higher consumer demand for news and gossip, hence a greater media interest. As someone who appears to dislike media attention, Katie has probably not missed its constant glare. Now a recognised person in the media industry the occasional mentions on Entertainment Tonight continue, albeit less often. There will always be interviewers and photographers wanting to gain access to her but the pressure has now reduced. Television generates a large and dedicated audience; it appears there are more people who became fans of Katie's work through watching Dawson's Creek than from all of her films put together. Many of the DC followers may remain fans but some will become less interested now the show has ended and thus the importance of keeping herself established in good roles increases. If Katie were to take another regular television role in the next few years it could solidify her existence as a television actress rather than a dedicated film star. No longer a teenager or new to the industry, Katie could choose an adult drama to move on to, but at this point in time she'd still be known as Joey Potter - the transition from one regular role to another needs to be more drawn out. Instead, if Katie were to wait a decade and establish herself and a new audience in film then a future television role would not have such a categorising or limiting effect. Film is opening Katie up to new experiences. After six years playing the same character, the challenges offered by the material diminish but in film Katie could have the opportunity to play a large variety of roles in a comparable length of time, thereby allowing her to stretch her talent. While production output may be smaller there is more emphasis on quality rather than quantity. To conclude, career-wise I think Katie should follow her plan to focus on films. So far she's made sensible decisions on the parts she's accepted and if she continues to take roles that stretch her talent and get her noticed then she could have a very successful movie career. So while the new weekly doses of Katie are definitely missed, I think she should avoid television for a few more years.
From Janet:
However, if she were to return to television..definitely a role that fits her age..a more mature role (though I liked seeing her grow and mature on Dawson's Creek!) I wonder what it'd be like to see her on a sitcom.. Perhaps a new doctor on ER? Why not take on a role on the OC..see how that mixes with Dawson's Creek! I would enjoy seeing her as a detective on Law and Order or CSI.. Perhaps a friend of Lorelai or Rory on Gilmore Girls? Passions or the Young or the Restless? Hahah..maybe not. From Shauna: Is it fair to think that Katie should stick to movies for fame alone? I highly doubt it. And I don't recall seeing a movie star who isn't in the weekly tabloid or gossip magazine. If you are in the public eye they consider you fair game, no matter if your credits are just TV or the silver screen. When Katie was on Dawson's Creek it was great seeing her every week. When she did a movie most people probably saw it because "it's that girl from that Creek show." or were devout fans because of their love for Joey Potter. When you look at the shows that are ending this year from Friends to Frasier, you come to realize the hold that TV has over one's affection. And none of the actors on those shows are considered to be any less successful. And they certainly aren't starving actors. I don't think Katie HAS to do films to be taken seriously. If Katie were to join another hour long drama and be in my house every week I wouldn't complain. Or consider her star power dimming. As long as Katie continue's to use her talent and show off what she can do I feel her fans will follow her. And she'll collect more on the way. Katie has what it takes, so be it on the big screen or the little one, she'll shine. From EllenMuthFan: I don't think she should. IMO, television actors who make movies then return to television don't do too well. Also, if the ratings are low for Katie's sitcom or drama, it will get cancelled and Katie doesn't need a "cancelled sitcom" in her awesome resume. Also, television will keep her from getting the good roles. A lot of actors have missed out on good movies that win oscars because they have been doing a television show. Sure, I won't argue that Katie has made movies during DC but none that establishes her as a movie actress except for Pieces of April. I hope she doesn't do television anymore. From JC: Let's face it - we miss seeing Katie as much as we used to. But I must admit I wasn't thrilled with the last few seasons of "Dawson's Creek," and was hoping she could escape before it was too late. That said, I would like to see Katie return to TV, but in small doses. As a guest star on "Law & Order" perhaps (hey, Julia Roberts did it). Maybe a show like "CSI" or other highly rated fare. I wouldn't want to see her return to TV on a weekly basis. I'm hoping her film career will take off with "First Daughter and "Batman Begins." Maybe if she was in a few more movies (she's averaging what..one a year?), we wouldn't miss her as much and want to see her on television.... From Oshram: I'd agree with this one completely. Spoiled as we were by having Katie on TV every week for six years, she should wait at least a few more years before venturing back -- unless a dream role for her just happens to open up. She's young, about to be married, and has other things going on in her life. I'd say she could wait until she's 30 (at the earliest) to think about coming back to TV. A little too soon now. But of course, she should do with her career whatever she likes. From April: I don't think there is any valid reason for Katie to return to TV, as she has fully explored all that it can offer her as an actress. She has also made it clear that she prefers films to TV so it's unlikely that we'll get that weekly dosage of Katie that we'd like. I say good luck to her whatever she decides to do, but TV would feel like going back in time instead of progressing forward. From Liana: I also think Katie should focus on films. Though I did enjoy seeing her every week on a show I want to see what she can do in movies. I would like to see her play different characters and not just on film - maybe she can do a play one day. I like the fact that Katie is not always in the media, it tends to get annoying to always see people on the entertainment shows, though it's not their doing. I think Katie has chosen great projects and I hope she continues that. I definitely see a great future ahead. From Sam: My opinion: Why not!? I mean, katie always will be in the public, whether she's doing movies or tv-shows. I'd love to see her in a new tv show, 'cos i think she's a great actress and she seems to like what she's doing on tv. The fact that she's been on DC just shows what a great actress she is and her huge talent. The contact with her fans would be bigger if she played in a tv-show. In a movie you can see her once and that's it - there's just one storyline and for 2 hours it's fun, but if she's gonna act in a new tv-show, you'd probably see her every week, that makes the contact between her and her fans stronger. From Frank: Yes, I think tv gives presence to the actor's name. Just look at the ex Practice stars -- what have they done since let go? On the other hand, James Spader was the new face on The Practice and now has his own show. From Paul: I think Katie Holmes reached as far as she could with the character of Joey Potter. She is clearly an actress with exceptional abilities, and great beauty. She should follow her current path into mainstream films, and I'm sure will in a short period of time be commanding title roles in world blockbusters. From Daphne: Partly I think Katie could return to television, now or in the future. But will she not always be compared with the success she had on Dawson's creek? People will always see her as Joey Potter and not be open to new characters. I personally think Katie did a good job on Dawson's creek and if the series would go on for a few more seasons I'd definitely watch it but I also think it's time for her to have new experiences and take on different parts - like what she did in Pieces of April, I didn't see the movie (it hasn't come out yet where I live) but I saw some clips and stuff and you can see she is growing as an artist. I think that if Katie should ever return to television, it would be best to take a part that's totally opposite from Joey, but for now I think she should follow her plan and focus on films. From Stephanie: I would have to agree with this for the most part. I believe Katie should avoid television for awhile at least until she is established as a talented and variable actress in movies. However, a lot of people tell me that when they see Katie in movies she acts the same as she did as Joey. I disagree with this because I believe audiences are used to Joey Potter and when they see Katie they automatically think of Joey; they have gotten used to seeing her as her Dawson's Creek character and so that is how she is classified. I think that Katie benefits from this in ways. If you look at it from the standpoint of believability, you could say that she made Joey Potter real to us and was able to get in touch with that particular character's thoughts and emotions so well that she in a way became Joey, but that is good, as that is the goal of actors and actresses. I mean they always talk about the fear of being typecast, but I say, if you are typecast that means that you obviously played the part well. For Katie, if she played that part well then I think it should attract auidences to watch her in Hollywood movies to see how she does with bigger and sometimes smaller parts. I believe though that everyone needs to get away from the "every character that Katie plays is like Joey Potter", because she has already played a variety of different roles, nothing like Joey, but people still see her as this innocent girl who lives in a small town. Well maybe that is because that is what we want to believe of Katie forever, that she is an innocent girl. She did come from a small town like her character on Dawson's. I think Katie has most related with Joey Potter and maybe that was why she was able to connect with the role so well. In closing, I just believe we should all look at her new life in Hollywood objectively and be open-minded when it comes to her acting, by not closing off all thought that she may just be a really big up and coming star. From Steven: I think screen time will make her a more accomplished actress as in her last film playing April. I knew she had it in her to be a good actress and hope that she gets gold for it someday. TV can be missed and most actors do well when on screen. So I wish her well and luck too. From Indri: Why not.... ist so easy for Katie to come back as a star on TV, but of course don't play the same character like Joey Porter or the Girl Next Door - as long she not make the same character ist oke. For instance we can see Shannen Doherty, I remember when she was a little kid she had a role on "Little House on the Praire" and then when she was a teen she play on "Beverly Hills" and then last she had a role as a witch in "Charmed". Well Shanen ist great actress she can play a lot of characters and she success to make the ratings of her show high :D And then right now many TV series have a good writer with many interesting stories and they can make a lot of characters and very brilliant to create the character, maybe this makes many movie stars go back to TV like Al Pacino, Alicia Silverstone and ...., so I thought TV series preety good too. So I don't mind if she back on TV as long she play a different character. Especially as there's not many good writers on movies right now, they always make sequels or remake the movie. From Pam: Absolutely, Katie Holmes should return to television. To continue enlightening us with her talent. I never get tired of watching Dawson's Creek episodes, everytime I see them it seems like I were watching the episode for the first time. Thank you to all that contributed! We apologise for not being able to share all responses.
